A Mashiko-yaki (益子焼) stoneware plate of sturdy, hand-formed character, the face carrying a composition of reed or grass forms executed in a combination of carved slip and combed line work against a rich iron-brown glaze ground. The central motif — upright reed stems with lateral leaf blades rendered in white slip reserve against the dark ground — occupies the well with confident asymmetry, while the border carries a continuous kogome (小米) fine-toothed combing that creates a dense textural band around the perimeter. Two small white glaze drips at the upper rim read as incidental rather than decorative, characteristic of the unselfconscious production manner that mingei values over controlled refinement. The reverse shows the natural sandy Mashiko clay body with a wide foot ring.

The combination of iron-brown glaze, white slip reserve, and combed surface texture is among the most characteristic expressions of the Mashiko folk pottery tradition, drawing on techniques with deep roots in Japanese mingei production and given renewed vitality through the influence of Hamada Shōji's (濱田庄司) Mashiko kilns. The reed and grass motif — simple, seasonal, and direct — exemplifies the mingei conviction that beauty is most fully realized in objects that make no claim to refinement.
