Vintage Japanese Nagamochi Wedding Chest Kiri Wood W/ Kiri Crest 71"L
Vintage Japanese Nagamochi Wedding Chest Kiri Wood W/ Kiri Crest 71"L
This is a large Japanese Nagamochi wedding chest with copper/bronze hardware and made of Kiri wood throughout. Traditionally used for bridal possessions and now often used for storage of blankets, quilts and other linens. Decorated with a Kiri leaf family crest (mon). This was made in Osaka as indicated on the label which notes a telephone number leading one to expect this was labeled mid 20th century, although possible made decades earlier based on the construction method. This tansu chest is made of solid wood (paulownia) with a natural finish. Some of the planks run the full length of the piece. All the hardware is solid copper/bronze. As is traditional the top is slightly rounded or convex over the entire length.
This chest was well used and well loved and has a warm aged patina. It remains in fine antique condition and should serve well for another century or more of use. It measures 71.5" wide by 28" high by 27" deep (182 x 71 x 68.5 cm). A great piece of Japanese history and a beautiful statement piece.
