Vintage Japanese Lacquer Wari-buta Usuki (Split-Lid Thin Tea Container)
A vintage Japanese lacquer usuki (thin tea container) natsume of the wari-buta type, distinguished by its split lid construction joined with small metal hinges. This form is a recognized but uncommon variation within usucha tea practice, differing from the standard lift-off natsume while remaining within orthodox tea-ceremony use.
The container is finished in a deep reddish-brown lacquer with visible wood grain subtly showing through the surface, giving warmth and depth to the form. The interior is coated in smooth black lacquer, evenly applied and well preserved. The rounded body is well balanced, and the split lid seats cleanly, opening and closing smoothly with proper alignment.
Wari-buta usuki are less frequently encountered than conventional natsume and are generally associated with practical or personal tea use rather than highly formal presentation. The restrained, undecorated surface emphasizes material, proportion, and lacquer quality, aligning with understated tea aesthetics.
Condition is consistent with age, showing light surface wear and handling marks expected of an antique tea utensil. No cracks, losses, or active repairs are observed. The hinges are stable and functional. A sound and authentic example suitable for tea practice, study, or collection.
