Antique Japanese Lacquer Natsume Tea Caddy w Raden Maple & Sakura
A refined antique Japanese natsume tea caddy finished in deep black lacquer and decorated with delicate raden (mother-of-pearl) inlay. The design features a maple leaf (momiji) and cherry blossom (sakura) motif, a classic seasonal pairing associated with impermanence, beauty, and the passage of time in Japanese aesthetics.
The lacquer surface is smooth and lustrous, showing subtle age-appropriate wear without loss of integrity. The shell inlay retains strong iridescence, with carefully cut forms set flush to the lacquer ground. The overall form is well-proportioned, with a softly rounded lid and body typical of classic natsume used for thin tea (usucha).
The piece is housed in its original wooden storage box (tomobako), bearing a handwritten inscription and seal. The inscription reads Sōkō (宗光), likely referencing the workshop, artist, or line associated with the piece. No additional documentation accompanies the box.
Condition is consistent with age, with light surface wear and minor handling marks expected of a functional tea utensil. No cracks, repairs, or structural issues are observed. A tasteful and well-preserved example suitable for tea practice, display, or collection.
