This is a vintage Japanese ceramic bowl known as a chawan (tea bowl) used in Japanese chado (tea ceremony). Its thin walls make it more suitable for tea ceremony of the warmer months as it is lower and flatter, indicative of the summer style. This bowl was hand thrown and high fired for lasting durability. It is has a warm white base crackle glaze with a red blue and gold patterned knotted Obi (sash for kimono) design on it. Inscribed by the potter (see picture 10). It comes with the Original matching wood box. The lid has a slight warp. The signature on the box and bowl match as can be seen in pictures 1and 10
This chawan measures 4 1/2" in diameter by 3" tall (11.5x 7.5 cm). Having been in storage, it remains in very fine condition.
