This is a vintage Japanese ceramic bowl known as a chawan (tea bowl) used in Japanese chado (tea ceremony). Its deeper shape makes it more suitable for tea ceremony of the winter months as it holds its warmth longer than the lower flatter summer style. This bowl was hand thrown and high fired for lasting durability. It is a creamy yellow base glaze with raised designs of waves in light blue, white and dark blue. Signed by the artist (see picture 9).
This chawan measures 4 3/4" in diameter by 3" tall (12x 7.5 cm).Having been in storage for over 90 years, it remains in very fine condition.
