This is a ceramic bowl known as a chawan (tea bowl) used in a Japanese chado (tea ceremony). This is an example of Hagiyaki or pottery from the Hagi region in south western Japan. It dates to the Showa Era (c. 1960's/70's) and is signed by the artist, 野間 瑞雲 Zuiun Noma (see pictures 8 and 11) on the bottom and back of the lid.
Suitable more for the spring and summer season. This chawan measures 5 7/8" in diameter and about 3" tall (15 x 7.5 cm). Having been in storage protected in the original presentation box with limited use for nearly 70 years, it remains in very fine condition.
