This is a vintage Japanese ceramic bowl known as a Kensui or ochakoboshi (waster water bowl) used in a Japanese sado / chado (tea ceremony). This vessel has a Japanese artist's name imprinted on the bottom(see picture 6). It is a type of Karatsu ware (made in Kyoto). During the tea ceremony the tea bowl is rinsed once to warm the bowl and another time to rinse it clean. The water used to rinse the tea bowl is drained into a Kensui such as this. This bowl measures 5 1/4" in diameter by 3 1/4" tall (13 x 8 cm). Having been in storage with limited use for over 90 years it remains in very fine condition.
