This is a ceramic bowl known as a chawan (tea bowl) used in a Japanese chado (tea ceremony). It dates to the Showa Era (c. 1950) and is signed by the artist, Hatsugama (see picture 3). The Japanese character on the side says Uma (馬 - horse) (see pictures 1 & 2).
Suitable more for the winter season, it is deep styled chawan used to keep the tea warm longer (see enlarged pictures). This chawan measures 5" in diameter and about 3" tall (12.5 x 7.5 cm). Having been in storage with limited use for nearly 70 years it remains in very fine condition.
