Japanese Stoneware Boat-Form Centerpiece Bowl, Tenmoku-Style Glaze
Japan, 20th century
Dimensions: 3.75" H × 5.5" W × 14.5" L (10 cm H × 14 cm W × 37 cm L)
An elongated boat-form (funagata, 舟形) ceramic stoneware, covered in a rich oil-spot tenmoku glaze (天目釉) — the dark iron-saturated ground animated throughout by a dense constellation of silvery-cream circular spots, each ringed in russet-brown, where iron oxide has separated and crystallized during the firing. The interior glaze pools to a rich amber-brown at the base; the rim is defined by a clean dark brown break line where the glaze thins. The form is shallow and wide, with pointed ends and a smooth, refined profile. The foot is unglazed. Base carries a manufacturer's impressed mark with the notation "Not for Food Use / May Poison Food" — standard language applied to decorative ceramics with high-iron or lead-bearing glazes.
Condition: Excellent. No chips or cracks. Rubber feet present on base.
An elegant centerpiece form — the oil-spot effect is particularly dense and well-developed.
