Vintage Japanese Studio Vase with Copper Red Flambé Glaze, 4"H

Japan, mid–late Shōwa period (circa 1950–1980)
Dimensions: 4″H × 3.25″W (10.1 × 8.3 cm)
Weight:

A compact wheel-thrown studio vase with a rounded belly, narrow neck, and gently flared lip. The form is coated in a richly saturated copper-red glaze with mottled, speckled depth, creating a dramatic surface that shifts from dark garnet to bright cherry tones under direct light. The lip transitions to a pale, cloudy rim that highlights the interior and emphasizes the fluidity of the piece.

The surface character recalls flambé or yōhen kiln effects, where copper compounds and firing atmosphere produce variegated reds, wine hues, and glaze pooling. This controlled unpredictability is admired in Japanese studio ware for its painterly surface and its close visual dialogue with traditional Chinese copper-red aesthetics. The small scale and elegant proportion make the vase ideal for single-stem ikebana or contemplative interior display.

Condition: Excellent vintage condition with natural firing characteristics; no cracks, repairs, or significant losses noted.

A distinctive decorative accent with strong presence, subtle translucency, and collector appeal for enthusiasts of Japanese studio ceramics, yōhen firing effects, and copper-red glaze traditions.
