Antique Japanese Sudare Bamboo Screen with Kamon Textile Borders 72"W

Dimensions: 72"W x 67"L

This large Japanese sudare (簾) is constructed from finely split bamboo reeds woven into a flexible screen, designed for seasonal interior use as a room divider, sun screen, or architectural hanging. The surface shows natural variation in tone from age and use, with a warm amber-brown color typical of well-aged bamboo. We had four of these available at the time of listing. Discount available for purchase of the full set.

The bamboo field is bordered and segmented by stitched textile bands featuring repeating kamon (家紋) crests, printed in dark indigo or sumi ink on natural fiber cloth. These bands reinforce the structure while adding visual rhythm and traditional decorative appeal.

The top edge includes fabric reinforcement and hanging ties, indicating this piece was intended to be suspended from a beam or rod. Wear is consistent with age and honest use, including light waviness, minor discoloration, and subtle irregularities in the bamboo reeds and textile. Structurally intact and visually cohesive.

Condition
Overall good antique condition. Age-related wear throughout, including minor surface irregularities, gentle undulation, and light textile wear. No major losses or breaks observed.
