A shin hanga woodblock print by Bakufu Ohno (大野麦風, 1888-1976), published by Kyoto Hanga-in circa 1950 to 1953. The scene shows a black ox drawing a harrow through a flooded rice paddy while farmers work the field by hand nearby, with buckets and tools resting beside a stone wall and a coastal hillside village in the distance.

Ohno relocated to the Kansai region after the 1923 earthquake and became known for landscapes, farm-labor scenes, and nature studies rendered in the soft, painterly palette characteristic of shin hanga. This field-preparation scene carries the same gentle, observational approach to rural labor found throughout his rice-cultivation prints.
