Japanese Keyaki Wood Go Bowl with Lid
Japan, mid-20th century
Dimensions: approx. 5″ H × 5″ Dia.
This finely turned wooden bowl with lid, made from richly grained keyaki (Japanese zelkova), was originally used to store Go stones—the smooth black and white playing pieces of Japan’s ancient strategy game Go (碁). The form is classic and tactile, designed to sit comfortably in the hand, with a rounded, harmonious profile that accentuates the wood’s natural pattern.
Keyaki is prized for its striking medullary rays and warm golden-brown tone, and this example showcases the mesmerizing undulating grain characteristic of the species. The piece has acquired a gentle sheen from decades of careful handling, emphasizing both material beauty and fine craftsmanship.
Now repurposed, this bowl makes a beautiful decorative container for small treasures, tea utensils, or desk objects—an elegant fusion of traditional utility and timeless Japanese design.
