Japanese Government occupation currency, Philippines 50 Centavos, PI block, 1942, heavily circulated
Japanese Occupation, Philippines; issued 1942
A Japanese military occupation banknote for 50 Centavos issued for the Philippines, PI block, in heavily circulated condition. The face reads THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT / FIFTY CENTAVOS with the tropical plantation vignette at right. Japan issued this currency across the Philippine Islands from 1942 following the fall of Bataan and Corregidor, replacing the existing Commonwealth peso with occupation scrip that Filipinos referred to as "Mickey Mouse money" — a pointed commentary on its lack of real backing or value. This example shows the heavy wear of active wartime circulation.
